About Time for a Tiny Update!

It is definitely time for an update! I can't believe how fast time is going right now. I'm not sure if its because of the amount of work I have to do on the tiny house or the strange COVID times? Who knows?! At any rate, with work, the tiny house and enjoying the summer (I'm trying to make an effort to live more in the moment whenever possible), I am now almost at the 3 month mark of when I received the tiny house shell from Mitch at MMRH Tiny Homes. I feel like I should be a bit farther along, but with the hottest July that Ottawa has ever seen...I didn't get too much work done in it. With that being said, I had a lot of decisions to make on finishing products which I was able to do in the comfort of air conditioning. I was also able to paint the girls bedroom as a little birthday gift to Rory. There have been many items that I pushed off making decisions on until I absolutely had to - such as paint colours, understanding the plumbing system, insurance and more. So, le...

Next Tiny Steps

The process of choosing how the bananas to build this bad boy. I suppose something that was important for me firstly was financing. For some reason I don't just have a hundred grand sitting in a spare bank account. So I had to reach out to a few sources to make sure that I could make this all work financially. Luckily, I have my condo which helped me get the financing I needed for my new home! Next, was to decide how to physically build it. I can't even count the number of times that I went back and forth. From renting a space to build it myself (I love the idea of taking on the challenge of building things for myself - so much more rewarding!), to finding a company to build it, to doing a combination of both. I reached out to several tiny house builders within several hours drive. They quoted out my build to be anywhere from $60,000 to $110,000 depending on the varies levels of construction it would have. This was the first time I realized that my tiny house wouldn't be ...

A Tiny Road Trip

Made this friend when we were in Burlington, VT for a quick stop on the way to Warren. She just wouldn't go away! "The appearance of Ladybug symbolism heralds a time of good luck. Moreover, it means that wishes and dreams are coming to fruition." There are so many things I want to write about and I am not a writer my any means (numbers are really my thing...) so sometimes I need to force myself to sit and get this written down. And things are currently happening to advance my tiny house, but I want to get all the details down from the beginning... So, back in October, after I came to the conclusion I was finally ready to do this my sister Becky and I went down to Warren, VT to the Tiny House Fest. I love Vermont so a weekend away with my sister in a place I enjoy to start to build on my dream...sounds like a lovely weekend right?! Well it was! The End. Nah, I suppose I should come up with a few more details than that! I'll spare you on the details of ...

Where to start?! The Design?

There are so many places for inspiration Pinterest, Blogs, shows like Tiny House Nation and the list goes on. But it all comes down to personal preference. Ive spent months looking at ads for tiny houses that are for sale as well as new custom builds and I got lots of great ideas - but nothing that was exactly as I wanted...and in my price range. At some point, I will go through the costs of all of this as I know for me it was one of the most important things. Could I have my dream tiny house and fit it into my budget spreadsheet?! (and let it be noted that I have already expanded my budget a couple times...) Anyways, I will start with posting a couple screenshots of one of the houses that jumped out to me the most. It was (and currently still is) for sale on tinyhouselistings.com and I reached out to the gal who is selling it to see if it would be a good option for me. We messaged a couple times and it turns out that hers has been sitting in one place for 3 years so she wasn't s...

How it all began...

Well, this is all a little crazy to me. Where to start? How did I come to this decision? Why did I decide to go down this route? How long have I been thinking about this? Why now? It’s a whole bunch of questions and I think I’ve only got the answers to a few. But I will try to best to answer along the way, and I really hope this is a tale with a happy ending! I, Mya Keffer, am ‘going tiny’. Sounds like a crazy weight loss program, but alas, it has to do with where I live. I am going to live in a tiny house on wheels! First things first, why a tiny house? I remember moving into my first townhouse over 10 years ago and seeing a show on TV for these tiny houses. They were so quaint and cozy. And because they are so small, folks were able to do high-end finishes and have them entirely customized without totally breaking the bank. Those tiny homes that first sparked my interest and they were all stationary, but so adorable!  <-- This picture is one of...
