How it all began...


Well, this is all a little crazy to me. Where to start? How did I come to this decision? Why did I decide to go down this route? How long have I been thinking about this? Why now? It’s a whole bunch of questions and I think I’ve only got the answers to a few. But I will try to best to answer along the way, and I really hope this is a tale with a happy ending!

I, Mya Keffer, am ‘going tiny’. Sounds like a crazy weight loss program, but alas, it has to do with where I live. I am going to live in a tiny house on wheels! First things first, why a tiny house? I remember moving into my first townhouse over 10 years ago and seeing a show on TV for these tiny houses. They were so quaint and cozy. And because they are so small, folks were able to do high-end finishes and have them entirely customized without totally breaking the bank. Those tiny homes that first sparked my interest and they were all stationary, but so adorable!

Over the years, I went to university and moved around a bit but still kept the idea of tiny houses in the back of my mind. Fast forward a couple years and now I have a one bedroom condo (roughly 600 sqft) and I find I stress about the amount of stuff I have. The items I need to clean, or move to clean, or haven’t looked at in 4 or 5 years and should sort but I procrastinate instead. Just stuff that accumulates and never gets used. Its this stuff that I think I can easily live without. So getting rid of stuff is a big part of my decision to go tiny.  Another big factor right now is my career – I travel a lot for work and have gotten very used to living out of a suitcase! Last summer, I was also very lucky to be able to work remotely from South America (Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil) – which again had me living out of a suitcase. I feel a sense of freedom of only have the items in my bag. I am hoping that going tiny will continue to give me that sense of freedom on a consistent basis.

The people I have told about going tiny have had lots of questions and are super curious about the process. So I figure I may as well write some of it down for folks who are curious!

    Hi Mya,

    Mitch mentioned you have yours in Almonte and to try to touch base. I too have land there and was looking at this as an option. I was wondering if you would be willing to chat about your experience?

Catching Up a Tiny Bit!

So we are now three weeks into 2021 and I cannot believe where the time has gone. My last post was back in August...and so much has happened since then! A couple things to start off with - Happy New Year! I know 2020 was a year most people would like to forget happened and there are definitely aspects I didn't like but for me, 2020 was a year of growth. I was able to make a dream come true that I had been thinking about for 10 years. Due to the circumstances, I was able to get things done a bit quicker and I was able to do more of the work myself which was a dream of mine. Life works in weird ways, and this one thing had its timing aligned correctly in my life. I am so grateful that I am currently snuggled up on my couch (under my loft walkway - super cozy as its like a little cubby) with a locally made candle burning from Crystal Wicks (I'm a huge fan!), listening to the radio with some little twinkle lights to add to the scene. About Time for a Tiny Update!

It is definitely time for an update! I can't believe how fast time is going right now. I'm not sure if its because of the amount of work I have to do on the tiny house or the strange COVID times? Who knows?! At any rate, with work, the tiny house and enjoying the summer (I'm trying to make an effort to live more in the moment whenever possible), I am now almost at the 3 month mark of when I received the tiny house shell from Mitch at MMRH Tiny Homes. I feel like I should be a bit farther along, but with the hottest July that Ottawa has ever seen...I didn't get too much work done in it. With that being said, I had a lot of decisions to make on finishing products which I was able to do in the comfort of air conditioning. I was also able to paint the girls bedroom as a little birthday gift to Rory. There have been many items that I pushed off making decisions on until I absolutely had to - such as paint colours, understanding the plumbing system, insurance and more. So, le...

Update: Tiny House Tuesday

I know...its been a while! But to my defence, Ive been working hard (or at least thinking I am working hard) on my tiny house :) It has been quite an exciting month - I don't even know where the past month has gone. I have been trying to keep up with posting pictures on my other social media platforms but alas I have not really gotten to this one. So let me begin! I will start with my first Tiny House Tuesday - March 12th, 2020. I can't tell you how exciting it was. When the Mitch from MMRH pulled around the corner with my tiny house - I don't think I even have words for it. I wish someone was recording me at that point to see my expression; I imagine it was priceless. It was very different seeing it here in Almonte than it was in the shop in Limoges. It made it so much more real! And the timing was perfect as it was the second day of the bridge in town being closed for maintenance so there was only a fraction of the traffic that we usually have.
