Catching Up a Tiny Bit!

So we are now three weeks into 2021 and I cannot believe where the time has gone. My last post was back in August...and so much has happened since then! A couple things to start off with - Happy New Year! I know 2020 was a year most people would like to forget happened and there are definitely aspects I didn't like but for me, 2020 was a year of growth. I was able to make a dream come true that I had been thinking about for 10 years. Due to the circumstances, I was able to get things done a bit quicker and I was able to do more of the work myself which was a dream of mine. Life works in weird ways, and this one thing had its timing aligned correctly in my life. I am so grateful that I am currently snuggled up on my couch (under my loft walkway - super cozy as its like a little cubby) with a locally made candle burning from Crystal Wicks (I'm a huge fan!), listening to the radio with some little twinkle lights to add to the scene. Here's a little (messy) picture to help you visualize my setup at the moment!

Its getting quite cold tonight so Ive got the space heater going - more details on why I am using that later - but I am nice and cozy, comfortable and so grateful for my tiny home. Now to backtrack to where I left off in August...

August 16th - Even just looking back at these pictures I can almost feel the anger and frustration as I tried to use the coping saw to get the angles correct. Clearly I wasn't coping very well...I know, such a bad Dad joke but it had to be said ha ha. I remember spending a whole weekend trying to get the trim correct on the two ends of the house where the wall meets the roof...and I still only have 3 of the four pieces up ha ha! I'll add that to the to do list for next summer!

August 19th - I got to work on getting the walls for the bathroom up. I had to figure out exactly how I wanted the door to be framed and the size - as soon as I did that and put in the 2x4s it was just a matter of getting the tongue and groove put up.

August 20th - Time to get the tiny house organized as the kitchen cabinets are being delivered tomorrow! To this point I have just been constantly moving things around to get them out of whatever little space I am trying to work in. The joys of working/building a tiny house! I wish I would have bought a pop-up shed or something for storage which would have been really handy...coulda, woulda, shoulda, right?! Next time!

August 21st - So much excitement! Even though it was weeks behind schedule, my cabinets were finally delivered! And they are already fully assembled so that's one less step I have to do! Although I am a wizard at putting Ikea things together!! Now to decipher from the one sheet little sketch how the heck this kitchen is supposed to come together?! Going to let it simmer for a couple days and make sure I have everything I need first.

August 23rd - Worked on the bathroom walls a bit more - added in two cubbies, not the prettiest but they will do the trick for extra storage and in tiny house living, storage is everything. I also got a new lock for the door as it was on sale (Whoot!) so I swapped that out. I am terrible at forgetting keys - ask anyone who's had to let me into the office because I've forgotten my fob or the broken screen at my condo from when I had a few too many one night...Anyways the new lock is a light-up code lock so hopefully I won't forget the code!

August 28th - Time to get started on the kitchen! The anticipation that goes along with this step is huge, not only is it a very expensive part of the tiny house, its a focal point. So after watching you tube videos and prepping off I went. I slowly got through the upper cabinets with some or several readjustments as needed, then added in the above-the-range microwave. Ahh its all coming together!! So cool to see this thing that was just on paper come to life.

August 30th - When I was designing the cabinets there was a couple of ways I could go about integrating the wheel wells into the kitchen and luckily I am tall! So instead of putting the cabinets at regular height and notching out the part where the wheel well is, I opted to have them a couple inches higher and have them rest on the wheel well. So before I could put the lower cabinets in place, I had to put some framing down. I remember looking at it for a minute and being like well there's a good 5 inches under the cabinets...that could be storage space! So I ended up figuring out a way to integrate Ikea drawers into that space and they just happen to fit perfectly height and length-wise! It is another item on my next summer to do list as I have the bases for the drawers in but I am going to make custom drawer fronts and I didn't get that done last summer. With the base down, the cabinet bases were placed and secured!

I am going to take a pause here for this post. But I am going to try to make an effort to catch up with the tiny house posts each week on Tuesdays....because Tiny House Tuesday...This has been such an amazing adventure for me and its still continuing and I am learning more and more each day. So I would love to continue to share as I go, but alas I must play some catch up first! Until next time!! Thanks for reading :)

Update: Tiny House Tuesday

I know...its been a while! But to my defence, Ive been working hard (or at least thinking I am working hard) on my tiny house :) It has been quite an exciting month - I don't even know where the past month has gone. I have been trying to keep up with posting pictures on my other social media platforms but alas I have not really gotten to this one. So let me begin! I will start with my first Tiny House Tuesday - March 12th, 2020. I can't tell you how exciting it was. When the Mitch from MMRH pulled around the corner with my tiny house - I don't think I even have words for it. I wish someone was recording me at that point to see my expression; I imagine it was priceless. It was very different seeing it here in Almonte than it was in the shop in Limoges. It made it so much more real! And the timing was perfect as it was the second day of the bridge in town being closed for maintenance so there was only a fraction of the traffic that we usually have. Driveway space pre-t...

About Time for a Tiny Update!

It is definitely time for an update! I can't believe how fast time is going right now. I'm not sure if its because of the amount of work I have to do on the tiny house or the strange COVID times? Who knows?! At any rate, with work, the tiny house and enjoying the summer (I'm trying to make an effort to live more in the moment whenever possible), I am now almost at the 3 month mark of when I received the tiny house shell from Mitch at MMRH Tiny Homes. I feel like I should be a bit farther along, but with the hottest July that Ottawa has ever seen...I didn't get too much work done in it. With that being said, I had a lot of decisions to make on finishing products which I was able to do in the comfort of air conditioning. I was also able to paint the girls bedroom as a little birthday gift to Rory. There have been many items that I pushed off making decisions on until I absolutely had to - such as paint colours, understanding the plumbing system, insurance and more. So, le...
